Playa Norte is the reason to make the trip. On the north tip of the island the sand stays calf-deep for roughly 100 meters into the sea, so the water reads as a single sheet of turquoise rather than a breaking shoreline. We shoot here at sunrise, before the day-tour groups arrive on the 9 AM ferries, when the beach is wide open and the light is still low and warm.
From the beach we move into the town center, where the streets are narrow, brightly painted, and golf carts are the main vehicle. That contrast — open turquoise water, then dense island color — is what gives an Isla Mujeres session range. One morning, two completely different looks, no driving required.
Why Tides Matter Here
Tide changes the beach more on Isla Mujeres than at most mainland locations. At low tide, Playa Norte exposes a wider sand shelf — ideal for kids and for walking shots where you want room to move. What the Session Feels Like
The first ten minutes are always the stiff ones — clients calibrating, photographer reading the light. That is expected, and the job is to get past it fast. We do that with movement instead of poses: walk the shallows, ride the golf cart, follow the kids. Posing is a trap because the body remembers how it is "supposed" to look, and that never matches how you look when you are actually present.
On an island this walkable, the pace helps. By the time we have crossed from the beach to the painted streets, most people have forgotten the camera entirely — which is exactly when the photographs worth keeping start happening.
Ferry Logistics
The earliest ferry from Puerto Juárez runs at 5 AM. For a sunrise session we take that one, shoot Playa Norte through the golden hour, then walk the town center before catching the 9 or 10 AM return. You are back in Cancún before noon, with the session finished before the island fills with day visitors. Couple and family sessions both run about 90 minutes and cover the beach and the town.
