Isla Mujeres is a small island off Cancún, reached by a 25-minute ferry from Puerto Juárez or the Hotel Zone terminals. The whole island is about 7 kilometers long and easily covered on foot or by golf cart in a single morning. For couples and families looking for a day-trip session that does not feel like every other Riviera Maya shoot, this is the best option within an hour of Cancún.

Playa Norte: The Best Backdrop on the Island

The strongest backdrop on Isla Mujeres is Playa Norte — the shallow turquoise water on the north tip of the island, where the sand stays calf-deep for 100 meters into the sea. We shoot here at sunrise before the day-tour groups arrive on the 9 AM ferries. After that we move into the town center, where the streets are narrow, brightly painted, and golf carts are the main vehicle — an iconic element that photographs immediately as 'island.'

Timing and Tides

Tide matters on Isla Mujeres. At low tide, Playa Norte exposes a wider sand shelf — ideal for kids and walking shots. At high tide, the colors are more saturated but the wading footprint is narrower. We check the tide chart before booking and time the session to match what you want from the water. Most sessions run 90 minutes and cover both the beach and the town.

Ferry Logistics

The earliest ferry from Puerto Juárez runs at 5 AM. For a sunrise session we take that one, shoot Playa Norte during the golden hour, then walk the town center before catching the 9 or 10 AM return. The session finishes before the island fills with day visitors, and you are back in Cancún before noon.
