Photographing in Puerto Morelos
Puerto Morelos is the small fishing town sitting roughly halfway between Cancún airport and Playa del Carmen. Twenty minutes from the airport, twenty-five from Playa, it's the closest stretch of authentic Mexican coastal life to the main tourist zones — and the quietest beach in the area at sunrise.
The town centers on a small zócalo (main square) with the famous leaning lighthouse, a short pier where the morning fishing boats come in, and a stretch of public beach that's significantly less developed than anything further south. The coral reef sits about 600 meters offshore, which keeps the water inside flat and calm — useful for sessions with small children or for video where you don't want crashing surf.
For couples who want the Caribbean light without the crowd, Puerto Morelos at sunrise is the strongest option in the entire Riviera Maya. We typically shoot the main beach south of the pier, then walk into the colored buildings around the zócalo for the second half of the session. The town is small enough to cover on foot in 90 minutes.
We also photograph in Cancun, Playa del Carmen.
Planning Your Puerto Morelos Session
Resort fee. Some resorts charge an outside-photographer fee — $150–$1,000 USD, set by the property (some don't charge), paid straight to them, never through Roots. We flag it before you book.
Where we shoot. Every beach in Mexico is legally public, so if your resort charges we shoot the free sand in front instead — usually the public beach just south of the pier.
Getting there. Travel between cities is on us — no travel fee — it's treated as included.
Weather. If it rains we reschedule free to the next open slot in your trip; light overcast we keep.
Delivery & booking. Your edited gallery arrives in 3 days, with a sneak peek inside 24 hours. A deposit holds the date — non-refundable but transferable, with one free reschedule on 48 hours' notice.
Meeting point. We confirm the exact meeting point when you book — usually your hotel or the nearest beach access. More in our FAQ.
Booking a Puerto Morelos Session
Two areas, both walkable. We usually start on the public beach just south of the pier — the least developed stretch of sand in the area — then move into the colored buildings around the zócalo (main square), with its famous leaning lighthouse. The whole town is small enough to cover on foot in a 90-minute session.
Sunrise, without question. Puerto Morelos has the quietest beach in the area at that hour. For couples who want clean Caribbean light without the crowd you get further south, sunrise here is the strongest option on the whole Riviera Maya.
Yes. The coral reef sits about 600 meters offshore, which keeps the water inside flat and calm — good footing for small children, and no crashing surf on video. It's one of the reasons Puerto Morelos works so well for family sessions.
No. Puerto Morelos sits about 20 minutes from Cancún airport and 25 from Playa del Carmen, and we treat travel here as included — no separate travel fee. Your only planning job is picking the sunrise date.
Yes — the town itself is half the session. It's a working fishing village: a short pier where the morning boats come in, the zócalo with the leaning lighthouse, and streets far less touristed than anything further south. That authentic coastal-Mexico texture is exactly why people pick Puerto Morelos over the bigger beaches.
What Clients Say
Reviews from
The photos came out absolutely fantastically and the photographer was incredibly professional. Our family isn't great at posing for photos, so having a photographer who will somewhat “force” the shots he knows will turn out good was extraordinarily helpful.
Roots Photography was a dream to work with and gave us beautiful, priceless family photos that we will treasure for decades to come. I can't recommend Lucas more highly!
Without a doubt, the best photographer I've ever crossed paths with. He took on the huge responsibility of capturing one of the most important and special moments for us — our baby's gender reveal — and exceeded all our expectations. He's extremely professional, reliable, attentive, and passionate about what he does. He made us feel comfortable the whole time. The quality of his work is spectacular and the delivery was incredibly fast. I recommend him with my eyes closed.
Jazmin photographed my daughter and me the day before I flew back to Argentina. We felt so comfortable — Jazmin is warm and professional. She gave us just a couple of very clear tips and everything flowed naturally. The photos turned out gorgeous. One of the best memories from my visit to Cancún.
We did our photo session with Roots and it was the best decision. They captured beautiful moments and did an incredible job. Thank you for this gift. We'd hire them again 100%.
Excellent service, quick to respond, attentive and professional. The session was with my 3-month-old baby and they made us feel very comfortable. We truly loved the photos.
