Photographing on Cozumel
Cozumel sits off the coast of Playa del Carmen, reached by a 35-minute ferry that runs roughly every hour. Most travelers arrive either on the morning ferry from Playa or on a cruise — and cruise day completely changes the city. From 9 AM until about 4 PM the San Miguel waterfront fills with several thousand cruise passengers; before and after, the town is quiet.
For a sunrise couple or family session we shoot the malecón (waterfront) and the side streets of San Miguel before the cruise crowd lands. The east side of the island (the windward, undeveloped reef coast) is the strongest single backdrop on Cozumel — wild, rocky, almost no people — but it's a 30-minute drive from town, so we usually save it for sessions of 90 minutes or longer.
The ferry timing matters for booking: a sunrise session followed by the 9 AM ferry back puts you in Playa del Carmen for the rest of the morning. For sessions later in the day, we recommend the 6 PM or later return ferry to avoid the heavy 4–5 PM cruise rush at the terminal.

Planning Your Cozumel Session
Resort fee. Some resorts charge an outside-photographer fee — $150–$1,000 USD, set by the property (some don't charge), paid straight to them, never through Roots. We flag it before you book.
Where we shoot. Every beach in Mexico is legally public, so if your resort charges we shoot the free sand in front instead — usually Playa Chen Río or Playa San Francisco.
Getting there. Travel between cities is on us — a flat travel fee covers the 35-minute ferry and the drive.
Weather. If it rains we reschedule free to the next open slot in your trip; light overcast we keep.
Delivery & booking. Your edited gallery arrives in 3 days, with a sneak peek inside 24 hours. A deposit holds the date — non-refundable but transferable, with one free reschedule on 48 hours' notice.

Booking a Cozumel Session
By a 35-minute ferry from Playa del Carmen that runs roughly every hour. Roots covers the ferry and the drive as a single flat travel fee quoted at booking, so you don't arrange the crossing for us. The ferry timing shapes the plan: a sunrise session followed by the 9 AM ferry back puts you in Playa del Carmen for the rest of the morning.
Only in the middle of the day, and we plan around it. From about 9 AM to 4 PM the San Miguel waterfront fills with several thousand cruise passengers; before and after, the town is quiet. We shoot the malecón and San Miguel side streets at sunrise, before the cruise crowd lands, or work the east coast away from town entirely.
The east side of the island — the windward, undeveloped reef coast. It's wild, rocky, and almost empty of people, which nothing near town matches. It's a 30-minute drive from San Miguel, so we save it for sessions of 90 minutes or longer; for shorter sessions the malecón and side streets at sunrise are the move.
Sunrise is cleanest — empty town and no cruise crowd. Evening sessions work too, but the ferry return matters: we recommend the 6 PM or later crossing back to avoid the heavy 4–5 PM cruise rush at the terminal. We build the whole schedule around the light window and the ferry you're taking home.
Playa Chen Río and Playa San Francisco are the two we favor for beach work. They sit on the quieter side of the island away from the cruise piers, so the sand stays calm and open — the trade-off is the drive, which is why we pair them with longer sessions rather than a quick sunrise in town.
