Documentary Sessions
in Playa del Carmen

Lifestyle and documentary photography in Playa del Carmen. Beach, 5th Avenue, cenotes — unposed sessions delivered in 3 days. We move with you across the coast — your story stays the focus, the landscape stays in the background where it belongs.

Photographing in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is the most walkable of the major Riviera Maya cities. The beach, the pedestrian Quinta Avenida, the ferry terminal to Cozumel, and the closest cenotes are all within a 25-minute radius. For a couple or family session this means we can cover more visual variety in 90 minutes here than almost anywhere else on the coast.

The beach divides at Avenida Constituyentes. North of it (Coco Beach, Punta Esmeralda) is quieter — wider sand, fewer beach clubs, a more residential feel. South of Constituyentes (Mamitas, Zenzi, down to Calle 1) is the postcard Playa del Carmen with curated daybeds, palm shade, and the iconic beach-club aesthetic. Both Mamitas and Zenzi allow photo sessions during their off-peak hours if you book a table and order — usually a $30–60 USD per person consumption minimum — which gives you a fully curated set unavailable on public beach.

Quinta Avenida is difficult to shoot during the day: vendors approach the camera, the crowd is constant, and shop owners object to setups blocking entrances. Early morning (before 8 AM) the cobblestones are clean and the storefront light filters down between buildings — that's the workable window. We shoot the south end near Calle 4 where the architecture is more textured than the chain-store cluster up north.

Cenote add-ons from Playa are straightforward: Chaak Tun is 10 minutes west, Cristalino and Azul are 15 minutes south, and Jardín del Edén is 25 minutes south. For a 2-hour session we can combine a beach start at sunrise with a cenote finish around 9 AM, before the day-tour groups arrive. The ferry terminal area (Quinta Avenida near Calle 1) also works for a short 30-minute pre-ferry shoot if you're heading to Cozumel.

Booking a Playa del Carmen Session

Yes, with a small consumption minimum. Mamitas Beach Club and Zenzi both allow photo sessions during their off-peak hours (typically before 11 AM) if you book a table and order brunch or drinks. The visual return is significant — daybeds, palms, lanterns, and curated sand setups that public beach doesn't have. We coordinate the booking and timing so we're done before the lunch crowd arrives. Expect $30–60 USD per person consumption minimum.

Daytime sessions on Quinta Avenida are difficult — the pedestrian street is packed, vendors approach the camera, and shop owners object to setups blocking entrances. Early morning (before 8 AM) is workable: most shops are closed, the cobblestones are clean, and the light filters down between buildings. We shoot the south end (near Calle 4) where the architecture is more textured than the chain-store cluster up north.

North of Avenida Constituyentes (toward Coco Beach and Punta Esmeralda) is quieter, with fewer beach clubs and a more residential feel. The sand strip is wider and the morning crowd is local joggers, not tourists. South of Constituyentes (Mamitas Beach down to Calle 1) is the postcard Playa del Carmen — busier, more amenities, more curated backdrops. For a quiet family session, north. For a couple session with a polished beach-club vibe, south.

Yes — Cenote Chaak Tun (10 minutes west), Cenote Cristalino and Cenote Azul (15 minutes south toward Puerto Aventuras), and Cenote Jardín del Edén (25 minutes south) are all within an easy add-on to a Playa del Carmen session. Most have a photography fee of 100–300 MXN on top of entry. For a 2-hour session we can combine a beach start at sunrise with a cenote finish around 9 AM, before the day-tour groups arrive.

The ferry terminal on Quinta Avenida (near Calle 1) and the boardwalk just south of it both work for short, kinetic sessions. We can do a 30-minute pre-ferry shoot that captures the walk down to the boats, the boardwalk light at sunrise, and the colored fishing boats moored near the pier. This pairs well if you're already heading to Cozumel for the day.
