Puerto Morelos is the small fishing town sitting roughly halfway between Cancún airport and Playa del Carmen. Twenty minutes from the airport, twenty-five from Playa, it is the closest stretch of authentic Mexican coastal life to the main tourist zones — and consistently the quietest beach in the area at sunrise.
Why Photograph Here
For couples who want the Caribbean light without the crowd, Puerto Morelos at sunrise is the strongest option in the entire Riviera Maya. The town centers on a small zócalo with the famous leaning lighthouse, a short pier where the morning fishing boats come in, and a stretch of public beach that is significantly less developed than anything further south.
The coral reef sits about 600 meters offshore, which keeps the water inside flat and calm — ideal for sessions with small children or for video where you do not want crashing surf. The sand is wide, white, and largely empty before 8 AM.
How We Structure the Session
We typically shoot the main beach south of the pier for the first half, then walk into the colored buildings around the zócalo for the second half. The town is small enough to cover on foot in 90 minutes, which means genuine visual variety without spending half the session in transit. The leaning lighthouse is an iconic local landmark and a natural anchor for the session opener.
